Students must meet their basic needs before learning can take place. Families that provide a loving, healthy/safe, clean environment with values to do one's best at all times and show respect for oneself and others will increase the success of their child's ability to learn.

When you have a concern or question about something in the classroom, contact the teacher with a note or phone call. When you have a concern or question about the building, contact the office or Mr. Courtad.

Some things parents can do at home to help are:

  1. Support, protect, care for, and love your child unconditionally, even when that means giving up your wants and needs. However, that does not mean doing everything for your child and making their life so easy that they are unable to do things independently and solve problems.
  2. Keep in mind that you are their first teacher and role model. Even when you think they aren't listening or watching, assume that they are and set a good example.
  3. Provide your child with home-cooked nutritious meals and snacks.
  4. Be sure your child gets between 10-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night.
  5. Insist on good hygiene.
  6. Compliment your child's accomplishments. Guide them through their mistakes and let them see the consequences.
  7. Give your child jobs within the family to show them they are needed and to teach responsibility. They can safely help with many age appropriate chores.
  8. Allow your child to plan, make decisions, solve problems and resolve conflicts (nonviolently).
  9. Encourage imagination, the arts, and the creative side of your child's interests.
  10. Do things together as a family, give your child a wide variety of experiences.
  11. Talk with your child often.
  12. Make sure your child knows his/her boundaries. You are the parent, and it is your job to say "no" when something is not appropriate.
  13. Put things in writing- write notes to your child and give them opportunities to write to relatives.
  14. Think out loud- let your child see how you figure a budget or solve a problem.
  15. Read - let your child see you reading (magazines, food labels, reports, directions) and read together with your child.
  16. Practice schoolwork - a little review each night reinforces what was learned at school.

Parenting is the most difficult job in the world, it is also a choice, and the most rewarding, enjoy it!
