East Elementary School provides a safe, clean environment in which children learn and develop life long skills.

Services/Academics

Our school has one class each of Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, and a DH unit. Our building houses 150 students with 26 full and part time staff members.

We offer services to students with special needs such as developmentally handicapped, visually impaired, and autistic children. Speech, physical, and occupational therapy are also provided to students in need. Students with higher level thinking skills are offered the services of the Talented and Gifted Program.

Our program includes: traditional instruction in Language Arts (reading, spelling, English, and writing), Math , Social Studies, Science/Health, Art, Physical Education, and Music. Technology and innovative teaching ideas are incorporated into the lessons. A summer intervention reading program is housed in our building.

East Elementary continues to offer a strong academic agenda for our students. Assessments and proficiency scores attest to this. Our library, classroom books, hands-on manipulatives, and the newest of technology tools provide information and practice to enhance the curriculum and encourage student involvement.

Mazza

In 1995, East became the 33rd Mazza School in the nation. This extension program is provided by the University of Findlay. This has helped in promotion of children's literature with visits from author/illustrators and access to the Mazza Museum on campus. Our students voted to sponsor Eric Carle's work from The Mixed-Up Chameleon, which hangs in the gallery. Author/illustrators Michael J. Rosen ('96), Wendy Watson ('98), Christopher Canyon ('00), Michael Dooling ('02), renowned children's poet Jack Prelutsky ('03), Sandra Philipson and Jenny Campbell ('05) have visited East Elementary.

Beyond the Classroom
Field trips, assemblies, and special studies boost and deepen our building’s objectives. East is involved with safety and drug abuse education through speakers and assemblies. The school recognizes Red Ribbon Week. Students celebrate Read Across America to strengthen reading skills. Gifts are given by students to the American Red Cross for our troops and Salvation Army’s Angel Tree to develop awareness in helping others. Students helped the animals at the local Humane Society. Mr. Courtad's recycle program the second Saturday of every month teaches responsiblity in caring for our environment. Representatives attend Arbor Day ceremonies and classes raise butterflies to release for Earth Day. Our PTO organizes a Halloween Parade of Costumes, Easter Egg Hunt, and a fund raiser.

District Programs at East
Special Education Services, Food Service Operations, and state/federal grants for the district are managed out of the offices at East.

Playground

Our playground has had new equipment professionally installed over the past few years. We have removed and replaced old, unsafe structures with new equipment primarily funded through grants from the Solid Waste Management District due to our efforts to recycle within the building and the Community Collection the second Saturday of every month.
