Journal Review

Write your first journal entry based on a topic of interest to you.  This is the only Journal review that does not have to be oriented around your science fair topic.  Journal review format can be found on page38.   Make sure you send a typed copy to www.turnitin.com in addition to turning in a printed copy.

Topic selections

Write 10 characteristics of a good experiment in your notebook.
Identify 6 potential science fair topics to be shared in class.
This should be a question you are interested in studying.  Your question should be testable via controlled experiment.  Use the internet for help.  There are many websites that can help you, try looking at the classroom web page. (www.uppersandusky.k12.oh.us/highschool/pohlman/icp/index.html)

Narrowing your topic selections / research problem

Have your selection narrowed to 2 topics. 
Write a research problem/question to go along with them. 
(Use the “The Research problem / question” sheet to help you.)

Variables and Hypothesis

Have an explanation of which factors will be changed while conducting the experiment and a hypothesis on the resulting impact of the change of one of your topics from assignment #2.

Journal Review

Approval

Get approval of your topic from assignment #3.  If the topic is rejected you must turn in a new topic by the end of the week.

Research Plan

Have a detailed list of materials that will be used to conduct the experiment and the detailed steps that will be followed while conducting the experiment.

Sources of information

Have at least 5 references properly cited in your science fair note book that relates to your project.  At least 3 of the 5 must come from print sources.  (no Wikipedia or .com’s use valid sources only)

Proper Forms

Have all the appropriate forms filled out for your project.  All projects must have; 1. Adults Sponsor, 2. Student checklist, 3. Approval form, 4. Research plan (research plan is the same as assignment #5)
Any additional forms are based on the individual projects and what they involve.

When and only when the forms are properly filled out may your begin the experimental portion of your project!  If your project will require an extended period of time get your forms submitted prior to the first Friday in November.

Conducting the Experiment

There should be a minimum of two weeks here to allow you to do multiple runs of your experiment.  Minimum Trials: 3 runs of experiment.

Submit a rough draft of your science fair research paper.  You must include the introduction, experimental design section (including materials list) and bibliography.
